Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia has announced a new partnership to launch luxury robotaxi service based on the new Mercedes-Benz S‑Class sedan, which they will be available to riders through Uber’s mobility network.

In a press release, Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia said that the new S-Class will be equipped with the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion architecture and full-stack NVIDIA DRIVE AV L4 software designed to support future robotaxi operations.

According to both companies, the NVIDIA DRIVE AV L4 software will be able to handle complex edge cases like unpredictable pedestrian behavior, unusual road conditions and aggressive cut-ins – often seen in real-world driving.

“NVIDIA DRIVE AV provides Mercedes-Benz’s new S-Class with a full-stack automated driving system designed to handle this long tail of driving scenarios, while remaining anchored to a safety-first architecture,” Nvidia said in a statement.

Speaking on the new partnership, Jörg Burzer, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, said :

“Mercedes‑Benz is the pioneer in safe autonomous driving. The next step on our roadmap is to enable a robotaxi experience based on the new S‑Class.”

“To accomplish our goal, we have strong industry-leading partners at our side. For us, these partnerships mark the beginning of our entry into the robotaxi market with the S-Class and MB.OS as the ultimate platform.”

This partnership with Nvidia comes a month after Mercedes-Benz announced another Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving project in cooperation with Momenta to develop a Robotaxi experience based on the new S‑Class. Mobility provider Lumo plans to operate the S-Class robotaxi shuttles initially in Abu Dhabi with the option for more locations later.
