Mercedes Cuts S-Class Production Due To Falling Demand For Flagship Limousine
Mercedes-Benz cuts production of its flagship S-Class ultra-luxury limousine due to falling demand.
Sales of S-Class fell 25% in H1 2024 to 28,100 units (-25%) while 7,000 units (-50%) of the EQS electric variant was sold.
With the drop in sales, Mercedes plan to switch to single-shift for the last quarter of this year at “Factory 56” plant.
In “Factory 56”, Mercedes makes all variants of S-Class, as well as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, EQS, E-Class and S-Class Guard.
German automaker, Mercedes-Benz, will cut production of the Mercedes S-Class at its state-of-the-art “Factory 56” plant in Sindelfingen due to falling demand for its flagship ultra luxury limousine.
Sales of the S-Class fell 25% in the first 6 months of 2024 to 28,100 units while the German car giant sold just 7,000 units (-25 per cent) of the EQS electric variant, compared to the 14,100 units sold in the same period in 2023.

With the drop in sales for the S-Class, Mercedes plan to switch from two-shift to single-shift working for the last quarter of this year, which will see the relocation of about 1,500 workers to other production departments at the Sindelfingen plant.
Man-machine-cooperations has significantly helped Mercedes increased flexibility and efficiency at its “Factory 56”, where all variants of the S-Class, as well as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, EQS, E-Class and S-Class Guard are produced.
Sales of Top-end luxury models in H1 2024
Between January and June 2024, Mercedes sold 136,900 units (-22 per cent) in the top-end luxury category, which models such as S-Class, EQS, Mercedes-AMG, GLS, Mercedes-Maybach as well as the G-Class, including the newly launched all-new electric G-Class.
While Top-End Q2 sales increased by 6% compared to Q1, it is 4% less compared to the same quarter of the previous year “mainly due to model changeovers and a subdued market environment in Asia, Mercedes-Benz said in a statement.
