“My Successor Will Be A Machine” : Mercedes Design Chief Says AI Will Take Up His Job Within 10 Years

“My Successor Will Be A Machine” : Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener says AI will take up his job within 10 years.
Wagener, who oversees designs for Maybach and AMG, noted that Mercedes has already integrated AI into its design workflow.
He was speaking to ABC News about the Mercedes Places in Miami, after expanding its product portfolio to luxury real estate.
Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener believes artificial intelligence (AI) will be responsible for nearly all aspects of the creative process within the next decade, adding jokingly that his “successor will be a machine and will be much cheaper than my salary [laughs].”
In a recent interview with ABC News, Wagener, who now oversees global designs for Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-AMG, noted that Mercedes has already integrated AI into its design workflow.
Wagener was speaking to ABC News about the Mercedes-Benz Places in Miami, as the German automaker expands its product portfolio to luxury real estate – also overseen by Wagener.

When asked “How important is AI for your designers?”, Wagener said :
“We work with AI now. You get 99% of crap with AI and sheer quantity. That’s the biggest problem — sorting out the good stuff from the bad. But you get 1% good stuff and we keep learning. It’s getting better every day.”
“AI will drastically change the way we design. I think in 10 years maybe most of design will be done by AI and it will make designers obsolete. My successor will be a machine and will be much cheaper than my salary [laughs].”
While it is predicted that AI will take the jobs of car designers within the next decade, man-machine-cooperations has significantly helped Mercedes increased flexibility and efficiency at its “Factory 56” in Germany, where all variants of the S-Class, as well as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, EQS, E-Class and S-Class Guard are produced.
