Rivers State also known simply as Rivers, is a state in the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria. Formed in 1967, when it split from the former Eastern Region, Rivers State borders Imo, Abia and States to the north, Akwa Ibom State to the east, and Bayelsa and Delta states to the west. The state capital, Port Harcourt, is a metropolis that is considered the commercial center of the Nigerian oil industry.





With a population of 5,198,716 as of the 2006 census, Rivers State is the 6th most populous state in the country.

Gunmen attacks are a threat for business travellers in the state, operatives reported incidents in the Obio/Akpor LGAs of the state.

There have also been recorded attacks within the state capital as well.

Cult and gang activity are another major threat for business travellers within the state, with active cells operating within the metropolis.

Travel along the waterways also carries some level of risk, as pirate activity as been noted along the Bonny Port Harcourt waterways in the state.





Foreigners and high-profile travellers face high levels of kidnap risk within the state, and a drilled travel security plan is advised to minimize risk exposure levels.

Hotels and rest areas used during travel should be checked for their physical security preparedness, and the travel route should be well planned. Business travel should be complemented by an added layer of security while in transit within the state.
