Sokoto State is one of the 36 States of Nigeria, located in the extreme northwest of the country on the national border with the Republic of the Niger. Its capital and largest city is the city of Sokoto. Sokoto is located near to the confluence of the Sokoto River and the Rima River. As of 2005 it has an estimated population of more than 4.2 million.

Being the seat of the former Sokoto Caliphate, the city is predominantly Muslim and an important seat of Islamic learning in Nigeria. The Sultan who heads the caliphate is effectively the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims.

Bandit activity has been recorded within the state and this combined with poor road conditions make air travel a much-preferred mode of transport.

Active bandit groups have been recorded in Bodinga, Illela, Sabon Birni LGA and threat conditions are high for business travellers in that axis.

For safety reasons additional layers of security are advised, particularly for high profile travellers.

Where road travel is completely necessary, a sturdy means of transport is preferable, as most of the roads may not be accessible to the average vehicle.

Incidents of kidnap, robbery and other forms of violent crime are a constant threat, and night-time travel within the state should be reconsidered.

In cases where night-time travel is a necessity, such movement should be complemented with adequate security coverage.
