NRC Certifies Lagos Rail Systems, Grants Operational Licenses For Blue And Red Lines

Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) certifies Lagos Rail Systems, grants operational licenses for Lagos Blue and Red Lines.
The Blue Line was granted a three-year operational license, following close to three years of successful assessment.
NRC granted a temporary six-month license for the Red Line, which will be converted to a permanent license after further assessment.
Issuance of these operational licences for Lagos Blue and Red Lines marks a significant step forward in developing Lagos’ rail transportation.
The Lagos State Government has recorded a significant milestone in the Nigerian railway transportation as Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) issues operational licences for Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines.
The Blue Line, which commenced full passenger operations on 4th September 2023, was granted a three-year operational license, following close to three years of successful assessment period of the infrastructure and operation.
Following testing of its pre-operational capacity, NRC granted a temporary six-month license for the Red Line, which will be converted to a permanent license after further assessment of its full passenger operations.
Expressing his appreciation for LAMATA’s efforts to secure the licenses, the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, stated that this was the first time NRC had permitted another entity to operate trains in Nigeria.
The Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, who received the licenses from Okhiria, commended the NRC team for their professionalism and intellectual engagement throughout the process.
LAMATA said the issuance of these operational licences for Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines, marks a significant step forward in developing Lagos’ rail transportation system and signifies a positive collaboration between the agency and NRC.
