Panasonic Set To Supply Lithium-Ion Batteries To Subaru As Both Companies Team Up

Subaru has a potential long-term deal with Panasonic on the table. The two parties have expressed their intention to work together in the battery field. In the second half of this decade, Subaru should get new lithium-ion batteries from Panasonic.

Subaru and Panasonic have announced that they are exploring a mid-to-long-term battery partnership. Panasonic is working on a new generation of cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells that Subaru is interested in. The battery cells could come in electric Subarus from the second half of this decade. There are plans to build a new car factory in Japan for this, where electric Subarus and Panasonic batteries come together.

It is not yet clear for what kind of electric cars the batteries would be intended. Subaru’s future plans in the electrical field are, by definition, still a bit vague. It previewed three new electric cars last spring, believed to be Subaru equivalents of Toyotas, much like the Solterra. But Subaru is also working on ” more proprietary electric models ” that we can expect in the slightly longer term. This possible deal with Panasonic probably has something to do with that. Toyota is also working on a new generation of EVs with better lithium-ion batteries. That may also be related to this.
