Volkswagen Provides A New Basis For The Combustion Engine Of The Future

The Volkswagen Group is developing a new platform for widespread use across the organization. This platform will also support combustion engines.
Does the internal combustion engine have a future? Volkswagen Group believes so, envisioning it as a range extender for electric vehicles (EVs). Their upcoming SSP platform, set to be used across most of their model range, will incorporate this concept.
The range extenders will work traditionally. That is, they will generate power to feed the battery and will not drive the wheels directly, as can be seen above. In principle, the cars on the SSP platform will always be electrically powered, regardless of whether a combustion engine is present.
It is not a big surprise that there is room for range extenders in SSP. Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume recently expressed enthusiasm about such technology. Volkswagen is already working on this in China, and Blume called it ‘ also interesting for Europe.’ Now it is clear that he was referring to what will be possible with the SSP platform.
According to Volkswagen, SSP is now set in stone. That is to say, the technological setup of the base is clear and complete; now the Germans can develop it further so that it can be used at the end of this decade.
