Outrage After Police Was Caught Dragging Woman Tied To Motorcycle Along The Street For Stealing (Video)

Police in Kenya investiges a video that shows an officer dragging a woman tied to a motorcycle along the street for stealing.

Kenya Police department is investigating a video that shows a police officer dragging a woman that was tied up to a motorcycle along the street for stealing.

The victim, Mercy Cherono, was alleged to be a member of a three-man gang that broke into the house of Deputy OCS at Olenguruone police station, David Kiprotich, on Saturday June 6.

Her alleged gang members were able to escape with Ksh.10,000, police uniform, a TV set and a sub-woofer.

In the short clip, which has shocked the entire nation, the 21-year-old woman could be heard pleading for her life.

A voice was also heard cheering the OCS who was also seen whipping the woman on the back while she screamed.

After she was caught, Mercy was beaten up before being tied to motorcycle and dragged along the street.

The incident caused serious injuries to her head, chest and feet. She is now being treated at Olenguruone Hospital in Kuresoi South.

Recounting her ordeal, Mercy, a mother of one, said she doesn’t know how she survived the brutal incident.

“Don’t know how i survived this. The policeman suspected i was among people who broke into his house and stole the items that Sunday morning. He said i had to be punished as he dragged me around.

“I could not resist. I accompanied him and we joined another group of people that was standing on the roadside.”

She added that :

“I pleaded for mercy but the officer couldn’t hear none of that. All this time I was not aware of the crime I was being punished for.”

Reacting to the incident, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander, Marcus Ochola, said the act was inhuman and unacceptable.

He said the department is currently investigation the conduct of the OCS after the video went viral.

The area OCPD, Henry Nyaranga, who confirmed the incident, however claimed that he was informed that Mercy was attacked by a mob and not the police officer.

Nyaranga said :

“Records at the station show that the lady was a victim of mob justice contrary to claims that she was attacked by an officer. The report says she was found stealing from a house belonging to one of my officers.”

Henry said investigations into the incident that led to her injuries had been launched.
