Repairs Of EVs After Accidents Are Significantly More Expensive Than Petrol Powered Models
Repairing electric vehicles is on average more expensive than repairing petrol and diesel vehicles. According to a new study by Mitchell (a firm that offers damage assessment solutions), the cost of repairing electric vehicles damaged in accidents rose 2.5 percent in the U.S. and 3.95 percent in Canada during the second quarter of 2024.
Mitchell published an average repair cost of $5,753 in the US and CAD 6,534 in Canada. Repairs for vehicles with petrol engines cost significantly less on average – $4,806 in the US and CAD 4,958 in Canada. This means that the repair of electric vehicles damaged in a collision was 20% more expensive in the USA and 31% more expensive in Canada.
Repairs of mild hybrids are on the same level as repairs of gasoline engines. However, more complex plug-in hybrids are 12.5% more expensive than petrol ones in service stations.
Interestingly, EVs are less likely to need chassis frame repair compared to petrol-powered equivalents (5.21 percent vs. 8.18 percent). This suggests that the structural integrity of electric vehicles could be greater.
