Toyota Best-Selling Model The Corolla Set To Be Renewed In 2026

Although electric technology’s future emission standards and industry regulations predict new mobility that will force the demise of conventional vehicles, the Corolla will continue to “live on.” The focus will remain on the hybrid version, but a PHEV with a 100 km range will be a priority.

The best-selling car in automotive history will continue to exist on the market for at least the next decade. It’s no surprise, given the success it has enjoyed and continues to enjoy, that Toyota can’t afford to offer a model without the Corolla.

The Corolla was launched back in 1966, and with its 13th generation, it seems to have no intention of ending its commercial career. With more than 50 million units sold worldwide in its 12-generation saga, the current model is also living in absolute commercial success.

A new generation could be introduced to celebrate the 60th anniversary

Toyota is already preparing to refresh the model, which has been on sale in its 12th generation since 2018, although its designers tightened its lines two years ago. According to initial forecasts, the Japanese manufacturer is expected to wait until 2026 for the official launch, coinciding with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Corolla.

Information is coming from Japan that Toyota is already in full development of the 13th generation. The Japanese automaker is working on a sedan version under the internal code 800D. After its public debut, the new Corolla could first “land” on the Asian market in early 2027. Other models for specific regions will follow suit in 2028.

New engines and integration with synthetic fuels

With more technology and, logically, more electrification in its range, Toyota does not currently have in mind its evolution towards an exclusively 100 percent electric car. All this indicates that the Japanese car should be offered as before, in sedan, hatchback, and wagon versions. For the drive, the Japanese are preparing a new four-cylinder with a displacement of 1.5 and 2.0 litres, which Toyota has already designed to optimize their integration with hybrid powertrains, as well as to potentially accept neutral fuels, i.e., synthetic or e-fuels, as well as biofuels or liquid hydrogen.

All of this latest hydrogen technology is already being tested by Toyota, notably with the GR Corolla H2, which became the first model in the world to run on this fuel system.

PHEV version with more than 100 km of electric autonomy

The Corolla in its new range should also benefit from a newly developed plug-in hybrid version. The model will be able to offer more than 100 kilometres of electric range. This is a figure that most new PHEV models on the market manage.

So far, no official images or teasers of the new Corolla have been released, nor have any prototypes, but leaks from Japan suggest that the model will adopt a more aerodynamic body, simplifying the entire silhouette. In addition, just a few months ago, the leaders of the Japanese manufacturer also announced that they are already developing new and more compact engines that will allow the height of the “hood” of future models to be lowered.
