Toyota has shared more photos of its small Compact Cruiser EV off-roader which recently won the 2022 Car Design Award (in the Concept Cars category) organized by Italy’s Auto&Design Magazine.
The retro-futuristic FJ Cruiser is one of sixteen (16) new battery-electric concepts that Toyota Motor Corporation revealed back in December 2021.
Created by Toyota Europe Design development center (ED2) in Nice, France, the miniature off-roader with boxy styling was inspired by the first generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser.
During the reveal, Toyota claims that the Compact Cruiser’s target audience is “young, professional urban dwellers who enjoy active outdoor leisure interests”.
The Compact Cruiser EV is also fitted with a ladder on the orange C-pillar, while some renderings created by Toyota show the tiny SUV with a roof rack, auxiliary lights, and branch deflector wires.

Speaking about the concept, Simon Humphries, Toyota Design Senior General Manager, said :
“Our research into electric vehicles has been ongoing for more than 30 years, and we’ve come a long way.
After an initial phase of contact with electric vehicles, people will want zero-emission cars that speak about them and express their lifestyle. And the Compact Cruiser EV is a perfect example of that trend”.
The massive rollout of Electric Concepts by Toyota and Lexus last year saw the reveal of various types of vehicles, including Sports cars, pick-up trucks, vans, small cars, saloons, family crossovers and offroading 4x4s.
These battery-electric concepts are projected to gradually enter production by the end of the decade. They also include the 2023 Toyota bZ4X, that is already on sale, and the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e, set to follow later this year.
