Watch : World’s Largest Unmanned Construction Vehicles Completes Road Project On China’s Busiest Highway
XCMG’s World’s largest unmanned construction vehicles completed road project on China’s busy highway without human.
The unmanned fleet consisted of 10 tandem road rollers and two large-width pavers.
The autonomous trucks completed the scheduled road tasks, including driving, steering and rolling compaction.
They were supported by techs like highly precise BeiDou positioning, inertial navigation and obstacle recognition.

Chinese construction machinery manufacturer, XCMG, has deployed its unmanned road construction fleet to complete the spreading and maintenance of the Suzhou Road segment of the Nanjing-Shanghai Expressway.
The Nanjing-Shanghai Expressway, a golden passage in the Yangtze River Delta, is the busiest highway in China and one of the highest-class highways in the Asian country.
Premiering the largest scale unmanned road construction fleet in the world, XCMG’s autonomous fleet, which consisted of 10 tandem road rollers and two large-width pavers, completed the scheduled tasks including driving, steering and rolling compaction.
All the vehicles were under the unified command of the BeiDou satellite positioning reference station. They were supported by technologies, including the highly precise BeiDou positioning, inertial navigation and obstacle recognition.

“This unmanned road maintenance and construction project allowed us to reach the ‘intelligent maintenance’ stage.
The inspection pass rate is much higher than that of traditional manual construction, and XCMG’s unmanned technologies have excelled in construction efficiency and control accuracy,” said Li Xin, Assistant GM of Jiangsu Xiandai Road & Bridge Co. Ltd.
According to XCMG, the unmanned fleet met all construction and maintenance requirements through the grid format tests of thickness, compaction and friction coefficient.
With the success of the highway maintenance project, XCMG, through its R&D, aims to further develop autonomous special vehicles for the most highly complex and difficult construction.
