For me, one city in which you’ll find the most weird names of places in Nigeria is Abeokuta. I am always puzzled anytime I visit that place. I couldn’t help it when I heard a bus stop called Iyana Mortuary (Road To Mortuary). Who would even get down at Iyana Mortuary especially at night..

Let’s quickly take a look at places with weird and funny names in Nigeria. These are the ones I know so don’t forget to add yours.

  1. Alalubosa (Ibadan): Someone that sells onions
  2. Odongunyan (Ikorodu): Mortar is pounding yam
  3. Adigbe (Abeokuta): Someone that blocks faeces

    Very funny street names!
The most dreaded one to me is Mortuary juncture; wetin I wan go do there (smile).
There’s a street called “Mosafunwoto” in Ibadan (meaning I’ve avoided them enough).
    Also “Idi-arere” meaning Arere’s buttocks/bum bum

Na Ibadan get am for Idi ooo; Idi Mangoro, Idi Ose, Idi Ope, Idi Oya, Idi Ikan, Idi Odo, Idi Osan, Idi Ishin, Idi Ape, Idi Molly e.t.c

Ibadan is also home to Oke (Hills); Oke Ado, Oke Bola, Oke Sapati (Sheperd), Oke Koto, Oke Are, Oke Mokola, e.t.c

Then we get am for Orita (Junction); Orita Meji, Orita Meta, Orita Merin, Orita Marun, Orita Mefa, Orita UI, Orita Aperin, Orita Challenge e.t.c

Then you hear namea like Odo Dandaruu (a corruption of the river “down the road”). The story was that a colonial officer told one Ibadan man to go and do something by that river down the road. The man not knowing the meaning of down the road thought the white man just named the river and he went about telling people that the name of the river is Dandaruu 😁😂😂😃 in fact, Ib get name pass anything.
