Year 2024 Car-free Day : Lagos State Government advocates for sustainable transportation.

Initiative aims to promote non-motorized transportation such as walking, cycling, skating, and other small-wheeled forms of commuting.

LASG urges Stakeholders to promote and support transportation systems that are environmentally friendly.

The Lagos State Government on Sunday 22nd September 2024 joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Car-Free Day, which aims to promote Non-Motorized Transportation.

Non-Motorized Transportation (NMT), also known as Active Transportation, includes walking, cycling, skating, and other eco-friendly small-wheeled forms of commuting.

“Car-Free Day is more than just a break from driving. It is an opportunity to reimagine our urban spaces,” said Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

“It encourages residents to embrace walking, cycling, and public transport while reconnecting with their neighbours and appreciating their local environment,”.

At the Sustainable Transport Festival, held at Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island on Sunday, he urged Stakeholders to promote and support transportation systems that are environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and economically viable.

Osiyemi described the event as a significant milestone in the State’s efforts to create safer, more liveable communities by reducing reliance on cars while prioritizing sustainability, public health, and overall well-being.

“Today, we gather to celebrate the vision of a city that prioritizes people and the environment. By leaving our cars at home, we are taking important steps to reduce our carbon footprint, improve air quality, and make our streets safer for everyone,” Osiyemi added.
