13 Classic Cars On Lagos Roads During Independence Day Drive (Photos)

We rarely spot classic cars on Nigerian roads. However, Independence day is always an exception. This is the day classic car enthusiasts usually storm the street of Lagos to display our automotive heritage. The event which is tagged Independence Day Drive is a yearly event. The 2019 edition was held during the month of October, and Autojosh.com was there to show you some of the classic cars that featured at the event. This event was anchored by Grills2Grills and Vintage Cars Nigeria. Without much ado, let’s get rolling with the names and photos of the cars.

1. 1964 Morris Minor

This is the Morris Minor 0f the 1960s. It was a small subcompact car that made waves in Britain.

2. 1965 Ford Thunderbird

This is the 1965 Ford Thunderbird owned and driven by Nigerian actor and movie producer, Kunle Afolayan.

3. 1967 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE (S class)

The grand luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz has always look stunning from way back. This model will tell you that Benz has also been in the pinnacle of luxury. This particular model is powered by a 4.5 V8.

4. 1967 Ford Mustang

The iconic Ford Mustang from 1967 was also present at the event. This is a valuable collector’s item.

5. 1970 Peugeot 404

The Peugeot 404 was the first passenger car to be assembled in Nigeria a few years after independence. It has been a grand vehicle and quite shocking to see one still driving after so many years.

6. 1971 Jaguar XJ6

7. 1971 Mercedes-Benz 250E (E Class)

Another old generation of the E-class. This is the “Regular’s” predecessor. Debuted in 1968, it became an instant success. It’s also available in coupe (C) body style as seen in car number “8”.

8. 1971 Mercedes-Benz 250C (E Class)

9. 1977 MG Midget

The MG Midget roadster is among the star attraction of the day with its sleek old school looks and an amazing paint job.

10. 1980 Volkswagen Beetle

Beetle – Tortoise – Ijapa – among many other names. If you know you never drove or rode in this car, hide your face!  The Beetle name was introduced in 1938. It quickly became a worldwide sensation and brought the Volkswagen brand into the limelight.

11. 1981 Jaguar XJ

Nigerian actor and movie producer, Kunle Afolayan also featured his Jaguar XJ. It was still buttery smooth and glowing in all its classic glory. Its luxury is still remarkable.

12. 1983 Mercedes-Benz W123 (2ooE/230E)

The Legendary Mercedes-Benz E class or 230E or as we all in Nigeria call it REGULAR”. This car is gradually becoming a collector’s item.

13. 2002 Jaguar XJ6

This beautiful Jaguar XJ6 also stood out during the drive. It will officially become a true classic in the near future.
