4,078 Vehicles Involved In 2,720 Road Crashes Between Jan-March 2026 – National Bureau of Statistics

4,078 vehicles involved in 2,720 road crashes between January-March 2026, according to National Bureau of Statistics. 

Commercial and private cars led with 2,929 (71.82%) and 1,089 (26.70%) respectively, while 60 (1.47%) govt vehicles was also involved in a crash. 

During this period, NBS data showed that 1,018 males and 271 females lost their lives.

The report also showed that 6,547 male (76%) and  2,028 female (24%) were injured during this period. 

A total of 2,720 road traffic crashes were recorded in Nigeria between January 1st and March 31st 2026 (Q1 2026), an increase of 2.64% compared to the 2,650 crashes recorded during the same period in 2025 (Q1 2025), according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

During the same period, NBS data showed that 4,078 vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes, indicating an increase of 0.47% compared to the 4,059 vehicles recorded in Q4 2025.

Of the total vehicles involved in the crash between January and March 2026, 954 were cars while 845 motorcycles, 118 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), 643 trucks and 256 trailers also made the lists.

During the same period, NBS data showed that 1,018 males comprising of 1,045 adults (78%) and 31 children (2%) were killed, which accounted for 80% of the total, while 271 females comprising of 231 adults (17%) and 40 children (3%) lost their lives.

The report also showed that 8,575 persons were injured during this period. Of the total, 6,547 were male (76%) while 2,028 were female (24%).

In terms of zonal distribution, the North-Central recorded the highest number of crashes with 752 cases, followed by the South-West with 699 cases, while the South-South recorded the least with 137 cases.

With respect to casualties, the North-West zone recorded the highest number with 2,675 casualties, followed by the North-Central with 2,544 casualties, while the South-South recorded the least with 402 casualties.
