But his bulletproof car, a gift from Germany and Mercedes, was destroyed by machine-gun fire, grenades and anti-tank shells.
Few days after the attack, Germany and Daimler-Benz gifted Shevardnadze new $350k armoured limo.
Their reasons for the gift was because Shevardnadze, a former Soviet foreign minister, supported German unification in 1990.
Back in 1998, the then-Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze‘s seven-car motorcade was blitzed by machine-gun fire, grenades and anti-tank shells late in the night as he headed home in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital.
The assassination attempt resulted in the killing two of his bodyguards and seriously wounding four others.
Shevardnadze, riding in an armoured Mercedes-Benz S600 limousine, was not injured, although the car was heavily damaged.
Hours after narrowly escaping the assassination attempt, Shevardnadze suggested that the armed ambush was staged by outside forces seeking to sow chaos in his war-torn country.
Footage taken at the scene shows the heavily damaged armoured presidential Mercedes-Benz limousine that saved Georgian President’s life.
Few days after the attack, Germany and Daimler-Benz gifted Shevardnadze a new $350,000 armoured Mercedes limousine to replace the old one.
The Shevardnadze’s car that was damaged during the ambush was also a gift from Germany and the carmaker, Mercedes-Benz.
