Acura Launches NSX Type-S Limited Edition Model With A 600Hp Engine (Photos)
Acura yesterday launched the NSX Type-S supercar, a limited edition model that is restricted to just 350 units. This model is the fastest and most powerful NSX ever built. The NSX Type-S will be manufactured in Marysville, Ohio plant.
The NSX Type S is visually more aggressive, sporting a larger front grille, extra front air intakes, broader, more angular side air intakes, and a carbon fibre rear diffuser developed from the one on the NSX GT3 Evo race car for added downforce and to reduce wake from the tires when cornering. Additionally, the Type S features extensively used carbon fibre for the roof, front lower spoiler, side sills, rear decklid spoiler, and diffuser, while the mesh in the front air intakes is now steel.
It is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V-6 that features new fuel injectors with a 25% higher flow rate, new intercoolers capable of dissipating 15% more heat, and turbochargers from the NSX GT3 Evo race car that increase boost pressure from 15.2 psi to 16.1 psi. The net result of these tweaks is an extra 20 hp and 37 lb-ft of torque for 520 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque from the gas engine alone. Mix in the trio of electric motors and total power output rises to 600 hp and 492 lb-ft of torque.
Acura also makes tweaks to the nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It can now upshift 50 percent quicker and has a new Rapid Downshift Mode that allows for skipping gears when moving to lower cogs.
Inside the cabin, there are not as many changes as we would hope for. However, Acura gave the NSX a new Alcantara headliner, a Type S logo on the glovebox, NSX logos on the headrests, and contrasting stitching. This probably means that there will be no updates on the old 7-inch infotainment touchscreen or the digital instrument cluster.
