A 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS has traveled an impressive 422 miles (679 km) on a full battery charge in a real-world range test by Edmunds, the longest-range the American online resource for automotive inventory and information has tested.
The EQS 450+, a $102,000 electric sibling to the famed S-Class sedan, far exceeded its EPA-estimated range of 350 miles (563 km), or about 72 miles (115 km) beyond the EPA figure. The electric vehicle drove nearly 20 miles farther than Tesla’s best model promises to.
Edmunds’ real-world range test involves driving an electric vehicle in its most efficient setting around a fixed loop that includes both city and highway roads. The publication tests every electric vehicle on the same real-world driving loop in Los Angeles.
Its testers drive the vehicle until the battery is almost entirely empty. The miles traveled and the indicated remaining range are then added together.
Unlike Edmunds, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates its range without driving on actual roads. EPA’s figures come from tests conducted on a dynamometer set up to simulate city and highway routes.
Every Tesla that Edmunds has tested has failed to meet its EPA-estimated range, while the majority of non-Tesla EVs have outperformed theirs.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS, the first all-electric member of the new S-Class family, is available in two variants, the base 450+ and the top-of-the-range EQS 580 4MATIC.
EQS 450+ and 580 4MATIC models will also be offered to customers in Exclusive and Pinnacle variants.
