Earlier in the week, the Lagos State Government announced the introduction of a daily ₦800 Consolidated Informal Transport Sector Levy to be paid by commercial bus drivers in the state.

The initiative, which will take effect from 1st of February and will harmonise the taxes paid by transporters to the state government, is part of measures to curb the menace of touts on major highways.

In a statement, Rabiu Olowo, the State Finance Commissioner said the levy is consolidated to take care “of dues previously accrued to local councils across the state, as well as revenue for Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Lagos State Inland Revenue Service, LIRS, among other MDAs.”

While reiterating that bus drivers pay nothing less than ₦3,000 daily as a levy, the Commissioner said the state government was poised to harmonise things and have a single charge of ₦800 daily.

In all, the Lagos State Government hopes to realise about ₦292,000 per vehicle/driver in one year, and approximately ₦22 billion from about 75,000 vehicles on the road annually.

Already, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have said that the ₦800 levy is not part of what they collect from drivers daily, which according to a statistical report released by the International Centre for Investigative Report, amounts to about ₦123 billion annually.
