These Glow-in-the-dark Highway Lines In Australia Are Making Driving Safer At Night
Australia paints highway with glow-in-the-dark paint to make driving safer at the darkness of the night.
When it is dark, the coating emits all the light it has absorbed throughout the sunny day.
The markings can be used for other applications, including dark carparks and boat ramps, and not just for roads.
Australia hoped it would provide drivers with a stronger visual signal to follow in low light.
These glow-in-the-dark highway lines on a one kilometer section of an Australian highway designed to make driving safer at the darkness of the night is making rounds on social media.
Australian company Tarmac Linemarking, in collaboration with OmniGrip and Vic Roads, completed a “trial run” of the new photoluminescent linemarkings in May.
The ‘smarter path’ line markings use the science behind the simple photoluminescence (light emission) found in glow-in-the-dark childrens’ stickers, toys and watches.
When it is dark, the coating emits light it has absorbed throughout the sunny day, which in turn allows drivers and pedestrians to see better in the darkness of the night.
Tarmac Linemarking’s John Emanuelli, told News.com.au that businesses and councils now want their paths illuminated with his technology following the successful trial run.
“There’s been a lot of interest since the trial run, it’s a great product,”
He also said that the markings can be used for other applications, including dark carparks and boat ramps, and not just for roads.
The ‘smarter path’ line markings is one of 70 projects undertaken under a $4 million government program to install new innovative treatments across regional Victoria.
It hoped that the glow-in-the-dark highway lines would provide drivers with a stronger visual signal to follow in low light.
