According to reports, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS will go hybrid and that will boost its output to more than 700 hp making it the most powerful 911 variant ever made, and a 2026 year has been fixed for the vehicle to come to light.

Based on the 911 Turbo with its flat-six 3.8-liter, twin-turbo engine, the GT2 RS is set to adopt a mild-hybrid powertrain with technology derived from the new 963 LMDh endurance race car. It’ll trickle down the range closer to the end of the decade, with an electric motor supplementing the internal combustion engine. Together, the two are said to make over 700 horsepower and a “significant increase in torque,” according to insiders.

According to the same report, Porsche’s engineers intend to cram in the battery behind the rear seats while the electric motor will be installed within the gearbox.

Porsche hopes to match rather than exceed the last GT2’s performance figures (a 0-60-mph time of 2.7 secs and a top speed of 211 mph). Going hybrid adds weight, so the firm is allegedly going to great lengths to make the next GT2 RS no more than 220 pounds heavier than the last-generation car. Mounting the battery (which could be air-cooled) behind the passenger compartment will dial in a 39/61 weight distribution.

While an all-electric 911 is unlikely to happen soon, this GT2 RS will give us a proper taste of how electrification will influence the character of the 911 in the years ahead.

The GT3 RS is still on sale at the moment.
