25% fare slash follows appeals to extend the 50% rebate, which ended on Sunday November 5th 2023.
Sited increase in the pump of diesel from N867 in August to N1,300 in November for the withdrawal of the 50% rebate.
Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a 25% passenger fare reduction for the regulated bus and rail transport services following appeals to extend the 50% rebate, which ended on Sunday November 5th 2023.
In a statement by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on Monday November 6th, the State Government sited an increase in the pump of diesel from N867 in August to N1,300 in November 2023 for the withdrawal of the 50% rebate.
The statement by LAMATA titled with : “Lagos approves 25% fare rebate for regulated bus and rail transport, reads :
“Responding to calls for the reinstatement of the 50% rebate on
fare for regulated bus and rail transport, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the implementation of 25 per cent discount beginning Tuesday, 7th November 2023.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu had on 2nd August 2023 announced a 50% discount in fare on regulated transport bus and rail transport which ended on Sunday.
“Following appeals to the Governor, he has extended the passenger fare reduction by 25% across the regulated bus and rail transport services until another review is announced.
“Within the three months period of the rebate, the pump price of diesel jumped from N867 in August to N1,300 in November 2023 representing about 50 per cent jump.”
Recall that Sanwo-Olu had on 31st July 2023 announced a slash in the fares of regulated public transport by 50 per cent to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal announced by President Bola Tinubu on 29th May 2023.
