An Electric Porsche’s Battery Can Be Thrown In The Trash With A Side Hit At 32 Km/h
Car manufacturers are constantly improving the batteries of electric cars. Among the leaders in the electrification of the vehicle fleet is Porsche, which analyzes and tests the batteries of its models at a specialized center in Weissach.
All electric cars have a battery management system that not only controls the delivery or consumption of energy, but also ensures that the temperature is uniform across all cells. However, when the temperature rises in one cell, it tends to spread to the others, potentially causing a fire.
The German brand installs the batteries inside a specially constructed aluminum housing that acts as a protective barrier, absorbing forces, and after a recent test, Porsche has published the side impact speed at which you can write off the battery.
In the example of the electric Macan model, this happens at a speed of just 32 km/h.
Despite the perfect weather resistance and battery damage control, Porsche prefers to throw them away, with instructions to dealers not to open or repair them. The German brand justifies this by saying that ‘the long-term consequences are unknown, so it’s best to play it safe’.
A big problem for customers who are then forced to pay the full price of a new battery, amounting to almost 10,000 euros.
