Mazda Italia Boss Promises The Next-Gen Miata To Stay True To Its DNA

Mazda Italia boss Roberto Pietrantonio has revealed plans for the future of the legendary MX-5 roadster, as well as details on updates to the CX-60 and CX-80 models. Although the next-generation MX-5 is still a few years away, development is already underway – with direct help from fans.
Japanese engineers recently visited Italy to meet with representatives of the MX-5 community and gather feedback. Europe, especially Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom, are key markets for this model, so the voice of enthusiasts there is taken seriously. One desire is always repeated – preserving the car’s DNA. “Even if cars take off one day, the MX-5 will still bring a smile to drivers’ faces,” said Pietrantonio.
The 2026 CX-60 model brings the third evolution since its 2022 launch, with improvements to suspension, handling and cabin sound insulation, and a new emergency crash system has been introduced. Similar updates await the larger CX-80, a seven-seat model aimed at families. Both models follow the Japanese principle of “Kaizen” – continuous improvement based on customer feedback.
Pietrantonio confirmed that Mazda in Italy does not expect significant growth of the overall market in 2026, but he predicts positive results for the brand itself, mostly thanks to the new electric model CX-6e. Regarding the alleged dispute with Ferrari over the name “Luce”, the director was clear: “There was never any conflict. For a brand like Mazda, Ferrari is a natural reference point, and there has always been a strong mutual respect.”
