BMW has to recall almost 1.5 million vehicles worldwide for service. The replacement of the airbag is free of charge, and the cause of the recall is a fault in the gas generator of the driver’s airbag supplied by Takata.

In an emergency, when deploying the airbag, there is a risk that parts of the housing or metal fragments will come loose during deployment. This could injure the vehicle’s occupants.

The recall affects various BMW models manufactured between January 2, 2006 and June 30, 2015. These include, but are not limited to, the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW M3, BMW X1, and BMW X3.

Among others, several internal model codes such as E81, E82, E83, E84, E87, E88, E90, E91, E92 and E93 were recorded. The range extends from compact vehicles to mid-size models and SUVs.

As part of the service campaign, the airbag is replaced in full. Vehicle owners do not incur any costs if the repair is carried out at an authorized BMW workshop. It should all take less than an hour.
