Because Young People Like To Talk To Their Cars, BMW Is Killing Buttons
Automakers often cite consumer trends to justify removing buttons, but cost-cutting is likely the real driver. BMW argues that its shift toward voice and touch controls is a strategic move to satisfy younger, tech-savvy buyers who prefer digital interfaces and multitasking over traditional physical knobs and switches.
BMW is streamlining dashboard designs, favoring voice and touch controls over physical buttons. Recent models like the i3, iX3, and X5 have significantly fewer controls, a shift BMW Group Australia CEO Vikram Pawah attributes to younger, tech-savvy buyers who prefer digital interfaces.
BMW Believes Its Younger Buyers Want The Newer Tech
‘BMW maintains that the transition toward voice-activated and touch-based controls is a response to the preferences of younger, tech-savvy drivers under the age of 45, who increasingly prioritize speed, multitasking, and seamless digital integration within their vehicles.
Physical buttons allow for operation without visual distraction, enabling drivers to adjust settings like climate and volume using muscle memory. While BMW prioritizes tech-forward digital interfaces for younger buyers, this shift forces drivers to navigate complex menus for simple tasks. BMW clearly believes this trade-off is worth it, banking on a generation that prefers voice commands over physical controls.
Some Physical Controls Will Survive
BMW hasn’t fully abandoned physical buttons, retaining essentials like window switches and volume knobs. However, the iconic iDrive dial is disappearing as the company phases out rotary controllers in newer models. While BMW attributes this shift to younger buyers favoring digital interfaces, the reliance on menus for critical functions—like climate control—remains controversial. Ultimately, BMW is betting that the next generation of drivers will prioritize seamless digital integration over traditional tactile controls.
