Kia Recalls More Than 20,000 EV9s For Airbag Issues
Modern vehicles are so complex that the crowded placement of features often leads to component damage, causing unintended mechanical failures and safety recalls.
While the Kia EV9 has earned a strong global reputation as the brand’s flagship electric SUV, a recent safety recall has been issued for a minor component failure that could lead to significant safety implications.
The NHTSA has recalled 2025–2026 Kia EV9 models due to an improperly routed ODS mat bladder tube under the passenger seat. The tube can be pinched and damaged when the seat is adjusted to its highest position, potentially preventing the airbag suppression system from detecting a child restraint. This defect fails to comply with FMVSS 208, posing a significant safety risk to children.
There are two primary indicators that a Kia EV9 may be affected by this issue: the illumination of an airbag warning light on the instrument cluster and an active seatbelt chime despite the seatbelt being properly fastened. According to the report, this defect is limited to EV9 models manufactured at the Kia Georgia plant between May 17, 2024, and May 13, 2026; units produced at the manufacturer’s South Korea facility remain unaffected.
In total, 21,290 vehicles are subject to this recall, with the NHTSA estimating that approximately 6% of these units may actually possess the defect.
