Volvo Desires For PHEVs To Drive Like EVs
As EV demand slows, Volvo is pivoting back to plug-in hybrids, focusing on significantly increasing their electric range to encourage more frequent charging and better mimic the daily utility of fully electric vehicles.
In an interview with Autocar, Volvo UK Managing Director Nicole Melillo Shaw indicated that the company continues to view plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as a crucial “stepping stone” for consumers who are not yet prepared to transition fully to electric vehicles. She emphasized that for PHEVs to be utilized as intended—rather than primarily as internal combustion vehicles—they must offer significantly enhanced electric-only range.
‘In the past, when plug-in ranges were very low, drivers rarely charged them. Volvo has invested heavily in making sure our hybrids offer a long range so that people can use them as intended.’
Volvo is launching a new generation of plug-in hybrids with larger batteries and significantly extended electric-only range. This shift is led by the new XC70, which achieves up to 200 kilometers (124 miles) of electric driving on the CLTC cycle.
Although Volvo is placing a significant emphasis on plug-in hybrids, the company remains firmly committed to its long-term electrification goals. Nicole Melillo Shaw reaffirmed that Volvo is fully prepared for an accelerated market transition toward fully electric vehicles, ensuring the manufacturer is positioned to support a shift in consumer demand should it materialize more rapidly than currently anticipated.
‘If everyone decided to drive an electric car tomorrow, we are set up to support that.’
As EV adoption slows, Volvo is prioritizing long-range plug-in hybrids as a bridge for consumers. By increasing electric range, Volvo aims to support daily electric commuting while retaining gasoline versatility, helping customers transition to full EVs at their own pace.
