Chinese Kids Scratch $530,000 Ferrari 488 GTB While Playing On It, Owner Sues Their Parents
A Ferrari owner in China has taken legal action against the parents of four children after they turned his pricey red Ferrari 488 GTB supercar into a playground, climbing all over it and causing extensive damage, as seen in trending CCTV footage.
According to local media, the incident happened in Kunming, where the owner, identified as Zhang, had parked his red Ferrari 488 GTB worth 3.6 million yuan (about $530,000) outdoors before leaving on a business trip.
Footage shared online captured the four boys—all reportedly under 10 years old—approaching the Ferrari with long bamboo poles before climbing onto the expensive car. They were also seen sitting on the windscreen, walking across the roof and using the rear glass as a slide.
The footage has since gone viral on Chinese social media, attracting millions of views and widespread criticism. When Zhang returned, he discovered deep scratches across the bonnet, roof, fenders and windows, while the front bumper had also been cracked.
Speaking to local media outlet Jiupai News, Zhang said he initially tried to be lenient because he is also a father. He reportedly avoided taking the Ferrari to an official dealership, where repairs were estimated to cost more than 100,000 yuan ($15,000).
Instead, Zhang used a local repair shop and aftermarket parts, reducing the repair bill to 29,360 yuan ($4,300). He then took the repair receipts to the police station in an attempt to settle the matter with the children’s parents.
The discussions reportedly took place twice, but the parents offered only 5,000 yuan ($730) as compensation. Zhang also said the parents did not voluntarily bring their children to apologise, causing the negotiations to collapse.
Reports indicate that police were involved in the mediation, though they noted that civil restitution falls outside their enforcement powers without a mutual agreement. With the settlement talks unsuccessful, Zhang officially filed a civil lawsuit against all four families to recover the damages owed.
