Official: Bugatti Is Now 100% Owned By Rimac As Porsche Has Sold Its Remaining Shares
Porsche has sold its stakes in Bugatti Rimac and Rimac Group for €1 billion, ending Volkswagen Group’s long-standing connection to the brand. Porsche will allocate €250 million of the proceeds to pension obligations while shifting its focus toward its core automotive business.
While appearing to be a strategic move to streamline operations, Porsche’s exit marks the end of Volkswagen Group’s nearly three-decade involvement with Bugatti. This era began in 1998, when then-CEO Ferdinand Piëch acquired the brand as part of an aggressive push to establish the group’s dominance in the ultra-luxury automotive market.
Ferdinand Piëch’s vision for Bugatti led to the iconic 1,000-hp Veyron, defining the brand’s modern era. Following Piëch’s passing in 2019, Porsche played a key role in the company’s evolution. By 2021, Porsche and Rimac formed the Bugatti Rimac joint venture—with Rimac holding 55% and Porsche 45%—to blend Bugatti’s combustion heritage with Rimac’s EV expertise.
The collaboration produced iconic models like the Mistral and the V16-hybrid Tourbillon, proving Bugatti isn’t just an electric brand. Porsche has now sold its stake to a HOF Capital-led consortium, though Rimac remains the majority shareholder with Mate Rimac as president. Porsche is pivoting to focus on its core lineup, including new electric and gas-powered models like the next-gen Macan, Boxster, and a potential three-row SUV. For Bugatti, this marks a new chapter; with orders full until 2029 and Mate Rimac’s leadership, the brand’s future remains strong.
