President Trump Wants China To Open EV Factories In The U.S
US President Donald Trump is open to Chinese car manufacturers producing electric cars in the United States, provided they employ American workers to do so. However, he intends to maintain the de facto American blockade on the import of Chinese cars.
“If China wants to open a factory here to build cars, that’s fine by me,” Trump told Fox News. “But they hire our people.” He wants to prevent Chinese manufacturers from producing cars cheaply in Mexico and then exporting them to the United States. Chinese manufacturers like BYD and Geely are rapidly gaining market share worldwide with relatively inexpensive electric cars.
Chinese cars are currently largely barred from the American market by high import tariffs and regulations restricting the use of Chinese technology in internet-connected vehicles due to national security concerns.
Trump made his statements a few weeks before a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.
