Who Owns Who? World’s Largest Automakers And The Car Brands They Currently Control

Automotive giant Volkswagen Group, through its sports car brand Porsche, no longer has any ownership link to the Bugatti brand that gave us the Veyron and Chiron, following the sale of its stake in Bugatti Rimac to an investor consortium.
Completed on September 9, 2026, the sale not only handed Porsche around €1 billion but also ended its ownership of Bugatti Rimac and its remaining ties with the French brand. Porsche had held a 45% stake in Bugatti Rimac, while Rimac Group held the remaining 55%.
With the sale, Bugatti remains under Bugatti Rimac, with Rimac Group retaining its majority 55% stake in the company led by founder Mate Rimac. Meanwhile, the HOF Capital-led consortium has acquired Porsche’s former 45% stake in Bugatti Rimac.
With Porsche’s exit, Bugatti is now the latest popular brand to depart from its former owner, reflecting a common automotive trend in which big players keep acquiring, merging or restructuring other brands to expand their portfolios or save them from going into extinction.
Following the sale, Autojosh takes a look at automotive brands and groups around the world and the car brands they currently control.
