Mercedes-Benz Secures Deal To Advance Solid-State Battery Technology

Mercedes-Benz has strengthened its decade-long partnership with ProLogium to gain priority access to its fourth-generation solid-state battery cells, marking a significant advancement in EV technology.

Solid-state batteries offer higher energy density, faster charging, and increased safety compared to traditional lithium-ion cells. Mercedes-Benz is partnering with ProLogium to test these Gen4 lithium ceramic batteries, aiming to integrate the technology into its next-generation electric vehicles within the coming year.

By combining ProLogium’s solid-state expertise with our development capabilities, we are reaching a milestone in evolving our future electric vehicle fleet.”

ProLogium currently operates a significant battery manufacturing facility in Taiwan and is planning a new site in Dunkirk, France, with a projected capacity of up to 44 GWh. This facility is expected to facilitate the supply of cells to European customers, including Mercedes-Benz.

Beyond its collaboration with ProLogium, Mercedes-Benz is actively diversifying its solid-state battery initiatives by testing lithium-metal battery cells from the American firm Factorial Energy.

In a notable development last year, a Mercedes-Benz EQS equipped with a Factorial solid-state battery pack successfully achieved a range of 748.8 miles (1,205 km) on a single charge. The test concluded with approximately 85 miles (137 km) of estimated range remaining, demonstrating the significant potential of this technology.
