According to CEO Adrian Hallmark, Aston Martin won’t launch its first electric car before 2033, and the company has a plan to offer models with V8 and V12 engines at least until 2035.

As Autocar recalls, Hallmark switched to Aston Martin from Bentley in September 2024 and had previously hinted that the company would launch its first electric vehicle (EV) by 2030 – already a delay from the 2027 deadline set by the previous management.

However, speaking to select media, including Autocar, he stated that customer demand for electric vehicles and legislation are “changing much faster than any car company can keep up with”.

As a result, Aston Martin faces a very complex situation full of different options and is now continuously examining different scenarios for specific markets and regions. Therefore, the company no longer has a set date for the launch of its first electric vehicle.

“We don’t need electric vehicles (BEVs) to be compliant [in certain markets] until just before 2035,” Hallmark said. “I’m not going to give an exact date because that would be imprecise. It could be 2035 or 2033, but it’s about that three-year span. It’s not 2031.”

Hallmark emphasized that Aston Martin “is not denying electric vehicles but is delaying their introduction”, and in the period until 2035 (when the current regulations of the United Kingdom and the EU mandate that all new vehicles sold must have zero emissions of harmful gases), the company will “mainly focus on vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE).”

Aston Martin has secured an agreement with Lucid to access its electric vehicle technology and has a partnership with current engine supplier Mercedes-Benz. However, because of such a time frame, as stated by Hallmark, the company could postpone significant investments in electric vehicles for the next three years.

“We have an agreement with Lucida, and what’s interesting is that, thanks to our delay, the technology that we will receive when that agreement is activated will be completely different from what was the subject of the original agreement,” Hallmark said. “We are also working with Mercedes-Benz on powertrains and electronics, and that partnership will be further deepened. When it comes to future battery electric vehicles (BEVs), even if we don’t launch the first model until 2033, we have three years at our disposal during which we can continue to research, think and evaluate different technologies and their development, as well as the state of the market and legal regulations. Only then would we need to start investments. So, right now we have very small investments that come down to research and analysis – they are even under ten million.”

Hallmark admitted that the reorganization of Aston took longer than the 18 months he had originally anticipated, saying that upon his arrival at the company he “found a worse operating situation than he expected”, especially when it comes to costs. However, he pointed out that the key work on solving those problems has been done and that “Aston now acts like a completely ordinary company”.

In the period until 2035, Hallmark stated, Aston Martin will focus on cars with internal combustion engines, adding, “We have a plan to keep the bigger and smaller engines [V8 and V12] and ensure they are compliant until the end of that period.”

He confirmed that there will be applications of hybrid technology, but “probably not a ‘plug-in’ hybrid, because we don’t need it; we don’t want an additional load of 200 kilograms”. He noted that in the period between 2030 and 2035, the entire range of models will be replaced, and that “the characteristics, performance and quality of the vehicle will raise the brand to a higher level.”

Hallmark also said that Aston Martin will continue with the Valhalla hypercar project, hinting that “there could be a variant with a different roof” and that they are “investing in that platform, so they plan to develop some exciting special limited edition models on it.”
