The German premium manufacturer is boosting artificial intelligence in production, achieving 30 percent time savings and enhanced worker safety. Audi has announced more than 100 AI projects in development. The German brand currently implements over a hundred different AI applications in its production facilities, focusing on quality control and generative artificial intelligence.

Three main AI tools

“Tender Toucan” represents a revolution in procurement. It is a new AI tool that automatically analyses suppliers’ offers, creates lists of requirements and evaluates how many of them are fulfilled. All of this will result in 30 percent time savings for employees who will no longer have to review all documentation manually.

There is also “IRIS”, an artificial intelligence that sees everything. The camera-driven AI application checks whether the technical data and stickers are correctly placed on the vehicles. It saves one minute of production time per vehicle, which is significant when counted in the thousands of cars produced.

The “WSD” tool represents the future of quality control. In partnership with Siemens, this AI system automatically detects welding metal deposits on vehicles. Starting in the summer of 2025, a robotic arm will remove these deposits, improving worker safety by eliminating the need for manual removal.

Data is gold.

Audi’s production creates hundreds of petabytes of data and thousands of gigabytes every day, laying the groundwork for AI-driven factories. Gerd Walker from the Production and Logistics Directorate says, “Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing our industry, enabling a production environment that is more efficient, economical, and maintains the highest quality standards.”

Audi is also collaborating with IPAI in Heilbronn, which will become Europe’s largest AI network with a campus spanning 23 hectares.
