Benefits Of Speed Limits On Nigerian Road

Few weeks ago, I posted the speed limits on Nigerian roads as stipulated by the FRSC (Federal Road Safety Commission). Some of the reactions revealed that speed limits are usually not appreciated. So I thought we should look at some of the possible benefits of speed limits on Nigerian road:

Reduced accidents: 

It reduces overall risk of road accidents as well as its severity if it eventually occurs.  Speed limits generally reduces lane hopping, unnecessary manoeuvres and speed into intersections and curves which makes the road safer.

Reduced fuel consumption:

The more you flog your car engine with the RPM tending towards the red zone, the more the fuel consumption. Speed limits definitely reduces such aggressive driving.

Reduced environmental pollution:

The lower the incidence of rapid acceleration, deceleration and braking, the lower the vehicle emission which reduces air pollution. It’s a good feeling to know that you are contributing your quota to saving the whole world when driving within speed limits.

Improved health:

More relaxed driving and less adrenaline rush is absolutely good for your health. Driving on Nigerian roads is a sure recipe for high blood pressure but speed limits can reduce such effect.

Lower maintenance cost and cars last longer:

Over-revving your vehicle engine and slamming the brakes adversely effect engines, brakes, tyres and other vehicle components.. They tend to wear faster. Lower speed cuts down maintenance cost and slows down depreciation therefore vehicles last longer.
