BMW Quietly Stops The Sale Of The iX Electric SUV In The US

BMW is ending sales of the BMW iX electric car in the US after just four years. Sales have fallen by more than 18 percent in the past year.

In the first three months of 2026, only 1,788 examples of the large model were delivered to the US market. The figures were the final straw for BMW management, writes BMW Blog, which confirmed that production has been halted.

The electric BMW i4 is doing much better in the US market. That model has sold more than 20,000 copies and is the brand’s most popular electric car. What does that tell us? Maybe on the American market, the situation is not so bleak for all electric cars; that is, maybe the iX has a certain problem.

The decision is reportedly a consequence of BMW’s preparations for a new generation of cars. The new BMW iX5 is coming, which means the current iX has played its part for American buyers.

– We are doing this as part of our progress as we prepare for the next generation of our all-electric vehicles.

confirms the spokesperson for the BMW Blog.

That would all be fine, but production has been halted for the US market only. The iX will continue to be sold in Europe. What is the real problem? Maybe it’s a design that didn’t attract customers. The American market demands models with a longer range and a more classic design, which the company wants to achieve with the next generation of electric cars.
