BMW Group starts small-series production of Hydrogen-powered iX5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) model.

It will be available in selected regions from 2023, where it will be used as a tech demonstrator for locally carbon-free mobility.

iX5 Hydrogen is powered by fuel-cell-electric system supplied by Toyota that produces water vapour as the only emission.

It has an estimated driving range of 310 miles and will go 0-62 mph in under 7 secs. It has a top speed of 118 mph.

The BMW Group has commenced a small-series production of its BMW iX5 Hydrogen Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) model at its Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ), in Munich, Germany.

Limited production of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen follows the completion of testing under demanding conditions. iX5 Hydrogen will be available in selected regions from 2023, where it will be used as a tech demonstrator for locally carbon-free mobility.

“Hydrogen is a versatile energy source that has a key role to play as we progress towards climate neutrality,” says Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development.





“Our BMW iX5 Hydrogen test fleet will allow us to gain new and valuable insights, enabling us to present customers with an attractive product range once the hydrogen economy becomes a widespread reality.”

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is being built in the BMW Group’s pilot plant at its Research and Innovation Centre in Munich. The base vehicles for the hydrogen model, the X5, is supplied by BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA.

The model-specific 12V and 400V electrical systems, high-performance battery, electric motor and fuel cell and two hydrogen tanks are all integrated into the vehicle during the assembly stage.

“It shows we already boast the necessary expertise for integrating hydrogen technology into the BMW iFACTORY production system as an additional type of drive.”

Powered by fuel-cell-electric system supplied by Toyota that produces water vapour as the only emission, the BMW has an estimated driving range of around 310 miles. BMW claims the iX5 can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in under seven seconds and has a top speed of 118 mph.
