In today’s tech-driven world, a standard carpet is like a classical music lover at a folk concert. Surrounded by software, screens, and lasers, a carpet seems insignificant but can also cause issues.

Namely, the American manufacturer of premium electric cars Lucid announced that it is recalling more than 4,000 all-weather floor mats made for the large Air sedan because they could slide around the driver’s footwell, jam the accelerator pedal, and cause unintended acceleration.

The problem came to light in August 2024, when a European sales associate reported that the car’s inner accelerator pedal momentarily got stuck during hard acceleration. Lucid technicians investigated the issue but were unable to replicate the problem. The following month, the brand received a complaint from a customer who claimed the floor mat was moving, and several other similar complaints followed. The fault will be fixed, but that won’t be easy. The company explains that some Airs are not equipped with anchors that are compatible with the updated floor mat. If you own one of these cars, you’ll have to figure out another way to fit the all-weather mat in the driver’s footwell. In Germany, the Lucid Air starts at €109,000.

What’s the point of this story? Always be careful when buying floor mats, especially those that are not standardized for your model, because they can slip and get stuck in the pedals, which can be dangerous.
