The CEO Of Lucid Motors Resigns Abruptly
Lucid Motors CEO Peter Rawlinson is resigning immediately but will remain with the company as the Strategic Technical Advisor to the Chairman of the Board.
The news is surprising for many, especially those outside the company. It seems to be unexpected, even for some people inside the automaker. The company’s board has appointed Chief Operating Officer Marc Winterhoff as the interim CEO while they look for a permanent replacement.
Rawlinson has been with Lucid since the company’s official launch in 2016. In a statement, he doesn’t explain why he decided to step down aside from simply saying it was time.
Shocking development
“With the successful launch of the Lucid Gravity, I feel it is the right time to step aside from my roles at Lucid,” said Rawlinson. “I am proud of what the Lucid team has achieved over the past twelve years. We have transformed from a small company into a recognized leader in sustainable mobility. It has been an honor to lead this remarkable team, and now it’s time for me to pass the baton to them.”
His departure comes as the long-awaited Gravity is on the cusp of finally reaching buyers. Initially revealed in 2020, the production version debuted in late 2023 but hasn’t reached dealerships. The Grand Touring trim, with a starting price of $94,900, is available for order now. The $79,900 Gravity Touring will be available in late 2025.
Rawlinson’s departure also comes at a time when the future of fully electric vehicles is unclear, both politically and in terms of waning demand. In any case, he leaves the company after a very strong year with 10,241 sales—an increase of 71 percent versus 2023.
“Lucid has solidified its technology leadership and defined roadmap,” said interim CEO Marc Winterhoff. “I am honored to lead us into this next phase of transformation and capitalize on the opportunities ahead. Our team is focused on ramping up production of the Lucid Gravity, preparing to launch three midsize platform vehicles, and advancing our low-cost Atlas drive unit while aggressively reducing costs.”
