CarPlay Goes Farther Than Ever With Apple’s Introduction Of CarPlay Ultra

Published

on

iPhone users have been familiar with Apple CarPlay for years, but it is now entering the next phase of its life. In collaboration with Aston Martin, Apple is now launching Apple CarPlay Ultra, a version of CarPlay that takes over almost all the functions of your car’s screens.

Apple CarPlay shows navigation apps, music apps, and phone details on your screen, but so far it is limited to one screen. That is the first thing that changes with the Ultra variant, because it also takes over the information screen behind the steering wheel.

What follows should be read with the smug grin of the Android user writing this in mind: Android Auto has been able to do this for a long time. That grin is now disappearing from the face, however, because CarPlay Ultra seems to go even further. For example, it seems that you can choose a theme for the speedometer and rev counter within Apple CarPlay and that this data is also displayed via the Apple system.

Because Apple CarPlay sees more data from the car, CarPlay Ultra is much more beautifully integrated, and it should rarely, if ever, be necessary to switch between CarPlay and the system that the car itself has on board. For example, Apple can also combine data from your driver assistance systems or climate control with the standard functions of CarPlay if desired.

Don’t expect CarPlay Ultra to work in your Polo tomorrow, because your car has to be suitable for it. CarPlay Ultra is being launched in collaboration with Aston Martin, and Apple already reports that Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are also working on it. Undoubtedly, more car manufacturers will soon follow.
