Chinese Vehicles To Be Produced In Stellantis’ French Factory
The Stellantis factory in Rennes-La Janais will soon produce at least one model of the Chinese Dongfeng Group, intended for the European market.
Also, the Stellantis plant in Poissy will stop producing cars from 2029 and focus on other activities, with no layoffs. Dongfeng is a long-term partner of the PSA Group and now of Stellantis. Dongfeng representatives visited the site twice in recent months, in late January and early April.
This factory is the historical bastion of Citroën, which produced the Ami 6 and Ami 8, Dyane, GS, BX, Xantia, then the C5 and now (only) the C5 Aircross, a mid-size SUV. The plant already has the capacity to produce at least 40,000 additional vehicles per year without major investment, and Dongfeng will step into that space. Of course, there is also the option of increased production.
The strategy is more or less the same with Leapmotor, another Chinese manufacturer with which Stellantis works, and that will use Stellantis’ factories in Spain. However, the factory in Madrid will be bought by the joint venture of Leapmotor and Stellantis. The French-Italian-American group also hopes to take advantage of Dongfeng’s capabilities in China: two future Peugeot models will be produced from next year at the Chinese Dongfeng Group factory and are intended for the local market, as well as two other Jeep vehicles, writes France Info.
