Nissan Murano May Get A Hybrid Variant After Failing The First Time
The Nissan Murano was available with a V6 engine for the majority of its existence. Although a four-cylinder version was also offered, most people connect it with a six-cylinder, and the current version is the only one that chose the smaller turbo approach. It’s also not available with a hybrid. However, an electrified engine was previously offered for the midsize crossover. By “short-lived”, we mean that it was sold in 2016 and only lasted one model year.
It was powered by a supercharged 2.5-liter engine with a compact motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, delivering 250 hp and 243 lb-ft. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions were made, but only about 600 to 650 made it to customers. For reference, the Cross Cabriolet remained on the market for three years.
A Second Attempt?
Since 2016, hybrid technology has advanced significantly. Nissan unveiled e-Power, a series hybrid technology that essentially converts any car into a range-extended electric vehicle, the same year the Murano Hybrid was discontinued. Initially used on the Note subcompact hatchback, it was later added to the Kicks and Serena minivan. Along with the X-Trail, the Elgrand luxury minivan, and the upcoming Rogue, the Qashqai now has it as well.
But according to a Japanese story, the e-Power treatment would be applied to another model. Following a “cryptic post” from a Nissan dealer, Creative Trend recently conjectured that the Murano will be the next. If this is the case, it will be the first midsize crossover to incorporate technology.

Nearly all of Nissan’s cars in Japan are electric, so if the company wants to increase the model’s chances in its native market, it needs to be available as a hybrid or risk remaining stuck on showroom floors. The hardware for it is already available from the firm, and e-Power can be installed on a variety of models thanks to its small package.
