Nissan’s Global Sales Are The Worst Since 2003 Crisis
Nissan is finally showing signs of a US resurgence, marking 19 consecutive months of sales growth and offering a much-needed lift for the brand.
Despite growth in the US, Nissan faces its worst global sales year since 2003, with an 8-month decline of 9.2%. The drop is largely driven by China, where sales plummeted 27% this year—a stark contrast to its 1.5 million units sold there in 2018.
Beyond China, Nissan is losing ground in Southeast Asia, Canada, and Europe to aggressive competitors. Reaching its 3-million-unit goal requires a 29% production surge through year-end, a difficult feat given the aging lineup.
The United States currently represents Nissan’s most promising avenue for recovery. Retail sales have increased by 8.1% through September, totaling 557,568 units, as the company pivots from fleet sales toward a greater focus on individual consumers. Furthermore, total U.S. deliveries experienced a modest growth of 0.6%, reaching 716,283 vehicles.
Looking ahead, Nissan anticipates that the launch of the Rogue e-Power hybrid in November will provide additional momentum, supporting the company’s objective to reach one million U.S. sales by the end of 2027.
Beyond North America, Nissan is seeking to optimize its Chinese operations. On October 8, the automaker announced plans to introduce the Frontier Pro and Navara Pro pickups to international markets. Developed and manufactured through its Zhengzhou Nissan joint venture, these models represent the company’s first vehicles designed and produced in China specifically for global export.
The Navara Pro is scheduled to debut in the Philippines and the Middle East in 2026, followed by Australia and New Zealand in 2027. Depending on the specific market, these vehicles will be available with either plug-in hybrid or internal combustion engine powertrains. Additionally, Nissan intends to export its N7 electrified sedan from China to regions including ASEAN and Latin America.
While these strategic initiatives broaden Nissan’s market reach, their ultimate impact on global sales remains to be determined. At present, the brand’s U.S. resurgence serves as its primary indicator of progress, even as challenges in China and other international markets continue to weigh on overall performance.
