Costa Rica shuts airport after cargo plane operated by DHL splits in two after making emergency landing.

The freighter had returned to the airport due to a problem with the left hydraulic landing gear.

DHL said the crew was unharmed and that one member was undergoing a medical review as a precaution.

Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaria International Airport was shut for few hours on Thursday after a Boeing 757-200 cargo aircraft skidded off the runway and broke in two during an emergency landing.

The 22.3-year-old cargo plane, operated by Panamanian firm DHL Aero Expreso, broke in half after sliding off the runway as it made an emergency landing on April 7th.

Sources says that the freighter, bound for Guatemala City, was forced to return to the Juan Santamaría Airport due to a problem with the left hydraulic landing gear.

DHL, part of Deutsche Post AG, said the crew was unharmed and that one member was undergoing a medical review as a precaution.

“We can confirm that a DHL de Guatemala SA B757-200F flight JOS2716 sustained damage upon landing at Juan Santamaria airport in Costa Rica.”

“We are pleased to report that the crew were physically unharmed in the incident. One crew member underwent medical checks as a precaution.”

“We are coordinating with the airport authorities on moving the aircraft from the area near the runway. However, the runway has reopened and operations have now resumed at the airport.”

“DHL’s incident response team has been activated and an investigation will be conducted with the relevant authorities to determine what happened. Until then, we are unable to share any further information.”
