Ford Refreshes Expedition For 2022 And Adds Timberline Trim (Photos)
The fourth-generation Ford Expedition has been around for approximately four years, so naturally, the time has come for the Blue Oval’s largest SUV to get a more significant update to remain competitive.
There are changes to lights (now LED units) and grilles across the board, plus the option of Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system, but the biggest news is the addition of a new Timberline trim for off-road fans and a Stealth Performance Pack for the style-conscious city.
On the inside, it houses a large, standard 12-inch infotainment screen, which can be swapped for an even bigger 15-inch unit taken from the Mustang Mach-E. The instrument cluster can be equipped with a 12-inch screen, too. Further new features available on the Expedition include an updated rear entertainment system with larger screens, a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
New for 2022 is the Timberline trim that was first seen in the Explorer. It comes with unique front and rear fascias that increase the approach angle from 23.3 degrees to 28.5 degrees and the departure angle from 21.9 degrees to 23.7 degrees. Ground clearance increases 0.9 inches over the standard Expedition to 10.6 inches. The increase comes from a combination of suspension upgrades and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires mounted on 18-inch alloy wheels. New springs and upgraded stabilizer bars along with a Timberline-specific steering tune keep things steady.
The next trim is the Stealth Performance Package which has the twin-turbo V-6 with 440 hp and 510 lb-ft and a sport-tuned suspension with active dampers. Large 22-inch black alloy wheels and gloss-black exterior trim round out the visual attitude.
Other Expedition models get the standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V-6 making 380 hp and 470 lb-ft (apart from the Timberline that uses the 440 hp powerplant). A 10-speed automatic transmission carries over for 2022. Rear-wheel drive will be standard while four-wheel drive, a 2-speed transfer case, and locking rear-differential will be available. When properly equipped the 2022 Expedition will be rated to tow up to 9,300 lb.
