This article shows you the steps for resetting the maintenance required light on the dashboard of Toyota Highlander. The procedure is same for second generation Toyota Highlander (2008-2013).

The Toyota Highlander’s ‘maint reqd’ light simply means a service interval has been met. And this means engine oil is due for change. It comes on 5,000 miles after the last time it was reset.

This light comes on strictly as a function of those miles; it has no way of knowing whether your oil has or hasn’t been changed in the interim. It is also not an indication that something is wrong with your engine.

Below are the steps you should follow to reset the maintenance required light in second generation Toyota Highlander.

Without Smart Key System

  • Turn the ignition to the “On” position. Press and release the trip meter reset stalk until the odometer display shows trip meter A. Turn the ignition to the “Lock” position.
  • Press and hold the trip meter reset stalk and turn the ignition to the “On” position, without starting the vehicle.
  • Observe as the “Maint Reqd” light extinguishes.

With Smart Key System

  • Turn the “Engine Stop/Start” switch to the “Ignition On” position, without starting the SUV. Press and release the trip meter reset stalk until the odometer displays trip meter A. Turn the “Engine Stop/Start” switch to the “Off” position.
  • Press and hold the trip meter reset stalk. While holding the stalk, turn the “Engine Stop/Start” switch to the “Ignition On” position, but don’t start the engine.
  • Observe as the trip meter reads “000000,” indicating you reset the system correctly. If fitted with the multi-information display, “Complete” appears on this screen instead of “000000” on the trip meter.
