If Consumers Desire It, AMG’s New V8 Engine Will Remain

AMG is developing a new V8 engine, which the brand’s CEO assures will be ready by the end of 2027 and will have a long lifespan. “As we are still in the development of the new V8, there is no end date that we have defined,” AMG CEO Michael Schiebe told Motor1 when asked when the company might phase out its future V8.

“There are still buyers who just want a V8, a pure V8.”

“We continue as long as we see that there is customer demand, and especially, you know, when it comes to the US, for example, we see that there are still customers who want only a V8, a pure V8. And that’s why we’re investing in the technology.”

Schiebe recalls the European Union’s 2035 rule that new cars must produce zero CO₂ emissions, which amounts to a ban on internal combustion unless carmakers can quickly invest in synthetic fuels.

“There is a natural end in Europe right now,” he said. But other countries do not face the same precipice. “In the U.S., in the overseas market, where there’s no set end date, I’m pretty confident we’ll be offering them for years, early 2030s, mid-2030s.”

Shibe points out that European regulations may change in the future. For this reason, Mercedes has ensured that their V8 engine complies with the stringent EU 7 emissions standards. “It wouldn’t make sense to develop it solely for the U.S. market. If you’re working on a new V8 engine right now, it must be EU 7 compliant since those regulations will come into effect at the end of 2027 and in 2028. Therefore, meeting these requirements is essential.”

The new V8 powertrain is rumoured to be mated to AMG’s existing 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine. But it remains a mystery in which models it will be installed.
